Learning and Teaching

Our approach to teaching

Teaching across the Faculty is organised around supervised practice, small-group tutorials and close contact between students and staff. Every initial teacher education programme is built around a structured cycle of practicum placement, on-campus seminar and one-to-one supervision, so that theory is tested against a real classroom before it is examined in an assignment.

Programmes are reviewed on a rolling cycle against the University's Outcome-Based Approach to teaching and learning, and staff are supported through the Faculty's own teaching development scheme to try new methods, from case-based learning in Psychology to studio-based design tasks in Curriculum and Instruction.

Staff and students trialling teaching technology in the Innovation Hub

FEHD Innovation Hub

The Innovation Hub is the Faculty's shared space for testing new ways of teaching before they reach a school or lecture theatre. Staff and students use it to prototype teaching materials, trial assistive and learning technologies with real user groups, and run short workshops on topics such as classroom data literacy and inclusive lesson design.

The Hub also runs a small annual grant scheme that funds staff-led projects to redesign a unit of teaching, with results shared across departments at an end-of-year showcase.

About the Innovation Hub

How teaching is supported

Academic advising

Every student is assigned a personal academic adviser in their first week. Advisers meet their advisees at least once each semester and are the first point of contact for course selection, credit transfer and any change to a study plan.

Field experience

Practicum is arranged with a partner school and supervised jointly by a University tutor and a school mentor. Placement offers are issued at least six weeks before a block begins, and a briefing is held for each cohort beforehand.

Assessment and feedback

Coursework is returned with written feedback within fifteen working days. Where an assessment is missed for a documented reason, students apply for special consideration through the Faculty office rather than through the course teacher.

Teaching awards

The Faculty Teaching Award recognises staff whose practice has measurably improved student learning. Nominations open each March and are judged on evidence of impact rather than on student satisfaction alone.

Student support

A one-to-one academic advising session

Academic advising

Every student is assigned an academic adviser at enrolment, who tracks progress, discusses module choices and flags support needs before they affect results.

Monogram portrait for Dr Chan Wai Ming

“The best feedback I ever received was a student telling me the lesson had been useless. She was right, and the course is different now because she said it.”

“My practicum supervisor visited my school three times that year, and each time we sat down afterwards and picked apart what had actually happened in the lesson. That habit of stopping to look closely is the one thing I still do in my own classroom now.”
